Who can apply for funding through Shia?
It is only our member organisations who can apply for funding.


Who can become a member?
Swedish organisations of persons with disabilities can apply for membership. The Annual General Meeting, where every member organisation has the right to one vote, decides upon the membership of new members.


What is Shia?
Shia is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation with 27 members - Swedish organisations of persons with disabilities - actively involved in global development co-operation in partnership with their sister organisations in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.


What does inclusion stand for?
Inclusion of all citizens is a precondition for a lonterm sustaiable development of society. Inclusion is achieved when the needs and conditions of every single indivudual is being respected and provided for. Inclusion of all people includes the right to represent one self and to be able to decide over matters of one's own life.


How is Shia funded?
With funds from the member organisations and Sida - the Swedish Agency for International Co-operation.


What does Shia do to eradicate poverty?
The base for Shia's work is development of organisations. Through strong organisations with the ability to speak for its members it is possible to achieve:
• Opportunities for persons to meet and discuss matters that are important to the one's being affected.
• Support and co-operation with politicians.
• Alliances between all kinds of organisations within the civil society whom might have a common interest of the issue.
• Strategies for advocacy through the media.
• Strategies for changing attitudes towards persons with disabilities. For instance through good examples: Persons with disabilities in leading positions. In various countries seats in the parliamnet are reserved for persons with disabilities.
• Preconditions for a general policy for the inclusion of persons with disabilities at all levels of society.
• Making persons with disabilities talk about their daily life conditions. To be proud and willing to fight for a better life is necessary to achieve the inclusion of everybody in a society. Inclusion is a precondition for democracy.


What is Shia doing to strengthen Human Rights?
The member organisations are alla actively involved in development projects, with the objective to eradicate poverty and the strengthening of human rights. For instance through fighting discrimination, causing the deprivation of basic human rights.
